How long should my hot water heater last?

01 Mar

how long should my hot water heater lastA hot water heater is an expensive appliance so it makes sense to do what you can to ensure it lasts.  How long your hot water tank lasts will depend on a number of things including:

  • quality
  • type
  • usage
  • water quality

Like most appliances, you get what you pay for

Like most appliances, if you purchase a quality hot water tank it will generally last longer. The most common reason why hot water tanks stop working is generally caused through corrosion in the storage facility. If you live in an area that has poor water quality or “hard” water, then you usually find that your hot water systems will need to be replaced more frequently.

Hot water systems that have continuous flow or are instantaneous usually have a much longer life span as they don’t require the storage of water.

Estimated life expectancy of a hot water tank

  • Glass or enamel lined tanks :  5-10 years (approx)
  • Stainless steel :  7-10 years (approx)
  • Coppper tanks : 7 years (approx)
  • Heat pumps : 10 years (approx)

Hot water tank warranty

Unlike other household appliances, some hot water heater warranties can range up to 10 years.  If the manufacturer is willing to offer such an extended warranty period then you can assume that it’s a quality product that is going to stand the test of time.

Remember to keep your warranty in a safe place.
